Working title: Untitled (Cradled Panel 2)

8x8", Acrylic on Wood

13 MaY 2009

This is another one of the panels I started a day or two ago.

This one started with the same yellow as the first one, but then diverged. In the first session, after the yellow dried, I dropped bright red acrylic ink onto the board from an eyedropper. In the second session, I put on a Red Oxide glaze for the stripes, then blotted it a little with a paper towel as it dried.

I'm a bit disappointed in the photo here; it doesn't quite capture the brightness of the original, and I didn't have a lot of time to fiddle around with it to fix it up in photoshop.

Another session working on this panel, and a big change. I wanted to add some dark on the right, but I didn't want to cover up some of the lovely red spatter that was there. So I turned the whole thing upside-down.

Then I did the vertical stripes with a mix of transparencies, and added a horizontal stripe, and it all looked very design-y. To break it up, I melded the horizontal into the vertical, and then added some literal elements: broccoli and an eyeball. I've been on a diet lately. Broccoli has been involved.

But this is no ordinary broccoli that I've painted. This broccoli has a different destiny.

The brightness of this picture is more like the original. I've now almost gotten this little piece to where I want it. Obviously, I've filled in one of the background yellow areas, strengthened some of the rusty-red curved strokes around the bottom, and added exhaust to the broccoli.

That's right, folks, it's rocket-propelled broccoli. And that'll probably be the finished title of the piece.

I'm happy with where this is at, and all that I anticipate doing to it is some strenghtening of porms and colors. The broccoli is looking a little flat to me, and things have gotten a little messy for my tastes on the right side.
