Working title: Untitled (Cradled Panel 1)
6 x 6", Acrylic on Wood
13 MaY 2009
I started work on a bunch of wood panels a day or two ago. Mostly, I'm looking to create interesting textural effects, using some acrylic techniques that I've been reading about. Here's the first panel, after two painting sessions.

It started with a coat of yellow, followed by two red glazes...one a more pure red, and the other the brownish Red Oxide. Between the red glazes, I did the writing, with an ink pencil. With an ink pencil, you wet the tip and it becomes ink. I sprayed the board with water where I was going to write, just to make sure.
I was disappointed in my execution of the green writing, as it slants downward. (I think I need to go back to school to improve my penmapship.) I may have to do something to lessen the impact of the slanted writing. I'm not too concerned, as this is still in a very preliminary phase, anyway. Things will change a lot.

I worked on my panels, including this one, the day after starting them. I didn't do too much to this one; it was mainly three things: I added the white-with-a-bit-of-emerald strokes, I put a thin emerald wash/glaze over the bottom-left corner, and I gooed up the green writing. The goo was created by pouring a small pool of gloss medium on them, and then, when it was half-dry, dabbing it with a paper towel. Thin took a rough chomp out of the center of the pool. The gloss medium dries to clear, and it's actually picking up a lot of flash in the photo below; in real life, the writing is less obscured.

I think I've started towards my objective of obscuring the slanty green writing, but maybe I've just highlighted it instead. On the other hand, I'm not finished yet: that rough bit of goo might be fun to paint over, as it'll give some texture or relief to the paint. Maybe I should make more rough goo pools.
I really like how the texture of the panel—the thin vertical striping and the almost-vertical crack on the left half—shows up in this.

Things are coming along on this one. It's mainly become a piece about texture and layering.

It will be hard to know when to stop this one, because the layering could go on forever. On the other hand, I don't want to let it go on for too long...I'd rather move on to other things. I have plenty more ideas to play with.
